LAWS

Liquor Laws
The legal drinking age in Tennessee is 21. Bars are permitted to stay open until 3 am seven days a week. Liquor and wine are sold through package stores in quantity. Both can be purchased at grocery, drug and package stores.

DUI Law
Tennessee has one of the strictest DUI laws in the United States. A first time DUI conviction constitutes a minimum of either 48 hours in jail or 200 hours of community service, receive an 11 month/29 day suspended sentence and probation, be assessed a $350 fine plus court costs, attend a mandatory alcohol abuse treatment program and lose your license for one year. Tennessee law also states a person who is DUI and has a child under 12 in the car may be charged with felony child endangerment.

Traffic Laws
Right turns on red lights are legal at most intersections unless otherwise posted; yield to pedestrians in the walkway and to vehicles that have a green light. Children under four years of age are required to be in a restraint while in the car. Parking in downtown Nashville is available in municipal and private parking garages and lots. Meters are located along many downtown streets. Several downtown meters have a prohibitive parking sign effective during the morning rush hours of 7-9 am and afternoon rush hours of 4-5:30 pm. Please check before parking during this time period.
In critical areas, vehicles parked illegally may be cited for a fine and towed away. The minimum fee to release an impounded car is $45, cash only (most fines are $25 and up). The tow-in lot is located at 11 Russell St., 862-7800, and is open 24 hours a day.
